The Future Has Arrived   Leave a comment

Friday, December 14 marked the end of our Indiegogo fundraising campaign.  When all the numbers were crunched and the clock hit midnight, we had met our goal of raising $5000 to get Milwaukee United SC off the ground and allow us to move forward on the road to fielding our first team this summer.  As my thoughts are a bit scattered, this entry will be a bit longer than past ones as I address the past, present, and future activities of the club.

First things first, I want to thank everyone who contributed to the campaign.  Some did that financially, whereas others helped by way of retweets on Twitter and shares on Facebook.  Additionally, those in web media allowed me to pitch my story in articles on their sites and appearances on their podcasts.  None of this, however, would have been possible without the encouragement given to me by so many and the emotional investment brought to seeing us succeed.  That said, there was some disappointment in the lack of breadth from which that support came, namely the local soccer community who have had us on their radar for the better part of four years yet didn’t seem interested in being part of the movement.  We move on.

So what does making our fundraising goal mean for the club?  It provides us a sense of legitimacy and gives us a platform from which to collaborate with the broader business and non-profit community in Milwaukee.  We will be able to promote the club to some extent in various ways (within reason, of course, as I am pretty frugal) and advance on some plans for the club’s foundation, growth, and future development.

So what is next on the docket for #yourhometeam?  The first thing scheduled is a team/community gathering and informational meeting on December 27th.  This event is open to all, so come out and grub with the boss while learning more about MUSC, both where we want to go and how you can be a part of the action.  From there, once the funds clear and arrive at the club from Indiegogo, we will begin the process of securing ourselves within the local, regional, and national soccer pyramids through affiliation with the necessary governing bodies and membership in a league that will provide us the best opportunity to succeed on and off the field.  Beyond that, I will be looking to add some bodies to the equation to implement the aforementioned growth and development of the club, particularly off-the-field.  I want to bring on one or two interns to handle things that have been getting put on the back burner due to lack of time on my part, so if you know (or are) a student with internship credit available at their college or university, get in contact with me.  The roster for summer 2013 needs to be finalized in the coming weeks as well.  On the field, the major focus for 2013 will be participation in the National Women’s Championships U23 tournament at the end of June in Kansas City, with the potential to enter a second team in the Amateur division.

Keep your eyes open for more news!  Thank you again for your support of our mission, our vision, and for the players who will wear the Royal and Emerald now and in the future.

The Final Countdown   Leave a comment

This week marks some critical junctures in the life of the club and the pursuit of playing this summer.  Our fundraising campaign ends on Friday and we are in need of raising another $3500 or so to meet our goal.  We have some players in the fold, but still need more to round out the squad.  This is where I need your help.  Consider donating to the cause (click on the crest to go to the site).  Share our story with your family, friends, and social networks.  Get players you know to contact me about joining the team.  I am not very good at asking, preferring the soft sell to pleading, begging, or haranguing.  Thank you for your support (be it financial, emotional, or word-of-mouth) and I hope by the end of the week, we will be on our way to lift-off and giving our local players the platform they need and deserve to take their games to another level.

Some Thanks and a Final Push   Leave a comment

We have 10 days left in our Indiegogo campaign and things look a little grim.  We have raised just over 20% of our goal, but more than a quarter of that has come in the past week.  If you have thought about contributing but felt there was lots of time left, the time to do so is drawing to a close.  If you have, thank you so much for helping to provide the opportunity for our community’s female soccer players to continue their development through our organization.

With that, I would like to showcase and highlight those who have been so supportive of our mission, that donor base.  Our supporters are spread out across the US, comprising ten states stretching from California to Georgia and involved in the women’s game in various ways, from fans to coaches to journalists.  Some of them have been behind this project since I first conceived it four-plus years ago, others have come on-board just recently.  All of them want to see us succeed and bring some needed change to the way players are found, developed, and allowed to shine on the biggest playing stages possible.  I can never thank them enough for their faith in me.

Would you like to join this team of benefactors who love soccer and want to help Milwaukee United chart a new course for women’s soccer in this community?  Click on the link above, pitch in a bit, and share our message with your social media world.
