Turf Burn, Sweat, and Three Points   Leave a comment

On a hot and humid day at Jack MacDonough Field on the campus of Milwaukee’s Bradley Tech High School, Milwaukee United Soccer Club used a 77th minute goal from Emily Ristow (Mount Mary College/Sheboygan South) to post a 1-0 victory over Croatian Eagles Soccer Club, bringing their 2013 record to 1-1.

Milwaukee United made three changes to the first XI that took on Racine United the previous week, bringing in Jenna Lahmann (UW-Oshkosh/Wauwatosa West) in place of Ashley Saskowski (St. Norbert College/West Allis Hale), Brittney Brown (Cardinal Stritch University/Shorewood) for Katherine Oleniczak (St. Norbert College/Wauwatosa East), and Erin Regner (Lakeland College/Pius XI) for Rasika Perera (Mount Mary College/Oak Creek) in hopes of creating more dynamism in the midfield.  Despite MUSC controlling possession, the heat wore on the players and both teams seemed content to get to halftime on level terms.  The second half saw Milwaukee United begin to stretch the Croatians’ back line through forays up the flanks by Brenda Hernandez (Cardinal Stritch University/Whitefish Bay Dominican), Cassie Braam (Cardinal Stritch University/Port Washington), and Kaitlin Malliet (St. Norbert College/DSHA).  It was one of these forays that would lead to the winning tally, as Braam utilized Hernandez’s speed and played a ball into space behind the Eagles’ left back.  Hernandez in turn played a cross into the penalty area that found Perera, who quickly moved the ball onto Ristow on the other side of the 18.  After shedding her mark, Ristow played a left-footed shot past Croatians’ goalkeeper inside the far post.  A stout defensive effort by the entire team and timely saves from Kristy Leopold (Southwest Minnesota State/Nicolet) would see the match out and secure the points.

Milwaukee United will take the field next on July 14th with two matches against teams from the Madison 56ers Soccer Club at the Reddan Soccer Park in Verona.  Game times are 11am and 1:30pm.
