That’s a Wrap!   Leave a comment

The 2013 Women’s Premier League season ended on Sunday with Milwaukee United taking on Milwaukee Sport Club and Waunakee Challenge U23 in its final matches.  A hard-fought 180 minutes out of the players brought home a 0-0 draw against Sport Club and a 3-2 loss to Waunakee.  With those results, the Owls end the season with a record of 2-3-1 for seven points and a middle-of-the-pack finish in the WPL South Division.

In the opener, both Milwaukee United and Sport Club started with just 10 players but eventually were able to field an 11th player (Sport Club after about 5 minutes of the first half, MUSC near the 40-minute mark).  Playing one down for most of the first half led to a fairly cautious approach, but the main fly in the ointment of the United attack was Sport Club’s left back, Jessica Allemang (UW-Whitewater/Wauwatosa West), who shut down nearly every foray the Owls made down her side of the field.  Kristy Leopold (Southwest Minnesota State/Nicolet) held the opposition at bay to record her third shutout of the season, while inspired performances from Brittney Brown (Cardinal Stritch University/Shorewood) and Ashley Saskowski (St. Norbert College/West Allis Hale) late in the match (the former moving to center forward from central defense and the latter the reverse) nearly brought home a game-winner, but it was not meant to happen.

The nightcap saw Milwaukee United get on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute on a goal from Brenda Hernandez (Cardinal Stritch University/Whitefish Bay Dominican) off a well-played leading ball through Waunakee’s center backs from Heidi Hetzel (UW-Oshkosh/Sheboygan South) and they headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.   Waunakee would level the score in the 50th minute, but the Owls returned to the lead in the 67th minute with Rasika Perera (Mount Mary University/Oak Creek) taking a pass from Leeah Rivas (UW-Oshkosh/Sheboygan South) onto goal and, after an initial save from Waunakee’s goalkeeper, sticking the ball in the net.  That lead, however, would be short-lived as a goal from Waunakee two minutes later brought the scoreline to 2-2.  MUSC captain Bre McDonald would leave the match shortly afterwards with a left leg injury, with the side playing the final 20 minutes with 10.  The two matches and playing short-handed took its toll and would lead to Waunakee scoring their game-winner in the 88th minute.

With the current season coming to a close, our focus shifts to scouting players for the 2014 season (where we hope to field two teams, either both in WPL or one in a regional or national-level league and the other in WPL) and building upon the foundation laid this year through advancement in the areas of coaching education, infrastructure development, and resource generation.  More details on all of these will be made known over the next few months.  I would like to thank this year’s players for their dedication to the cause in the face of (at times) trying circumstances.  I hope you enjoyed playing for us this summer and will consider being part of our growth in the coming year.

Madtown Madness   1 comment

Following two weekends off from Women’s Premier League action, Milwaukee United hit the road for a pair of matches in the state capital of Madison, facing the second and third-level teams from the Madison 56ers organization (their top team plays in the national-level Women’s Premier Soccer League).  When all was said and done, a split of the spoils was attained, with a 1-0 win in the opener countered by a 4-0 setback in the nightcap.

The first match of the day was against the Madison 56ers Capitals.  Both teams entered the match short-handed, with just 14 in the squad for MUSC and 12 for the Capitals.  The knock-down, grind-it-out affair looked as though it would end in a scoreless draw, but in the second minute of second-half stoppage time an offensive foray down the left flank by defender Kaitlin Malliet (St. Norbert College/DSHA) took advantage of a Capitals’ weakness which the Owls had been trying to exploit throughout the match.  Malliet’s cross found center back Brittney Brown (Cardinal Stritch University/Shorewood) at the near post where she fired a shot that the Capitals’ goalkeeper saved, but couldn’t control.  The rebound fell to Brown and she tucked the ball into the net.  A frenetic last-gasp effort by the Capitals led to a pair of corner kicks, with Brown, Malliet, defender Bre McDonald (Cardinal Stritch University/Port Washington), and goalkeeper Kristy Leopold (Southwest Minnesota State/Nicolet) providing the defensive backing to stave off the onslaught and secure the win and Leopold’s second shutout of the campaign.

After a break of around 40 minutes, the second fixture began, with MUSC stepping up to face the Madison 56ers Majors.  The first match took a heavy toll on the Owls, with a fresh-legged Majors side tallying in the third minute, followed by a goal in the 24th minute and a third on the stroke of halftime.  Herculean efforts from the entire squad kept the scoreline respectable, with performances of note turned in by forward Brenda Hernandez (Cardinal Stritch University/Whitefish Bay Dominican), defender Kari Schramer (Cardinal Stritch University/Oak Creek), midfielders Heidi Hetzel (UW-Oshkosh/Sheboygan South) and Cassie Braam (Cardinal Stritch University/Port Washington), Brown, and McDonald.

The final two matches of Milwaukee United’s inaugural season will be on July 28th when they travel to the Schwabenhof in Menomonee Falls to take on Milwaukee Sport Club and Waunakee Challenge U-23.  Game times are 1pm and 3pm.
