A Bridge Too Far   Leave a comment

After taking the Fourth of July weekend off, Milwaukee United SC was back in action on Saturday against the Croatian Eagles Majors in a battle of the last two unbeatens in the South Division of the Women’s Premier League.  Despite scoring first for the fourth time in four matches, the Owls fell to the Majors, 5-3.  Two goals from Jenny Zima (Millikin University/Pius XI) on either side of halftime were the difference as Croatians clinched the Women’s Premier League-South title and automatic playoff berth.

Once again, Milwaukee United got out to a fast start, with Brandi Peltier (Ripon College/Hustisford) scoring on a cross from Cassie Braam (Cardinal Stritch University/Port Washington) to stake the Owls to a 1-0 lead after three minutes.  The Majors pulled level four minutes later and then took the lead in the ninth minute before Zima’s first goal of the day moved them out to a 3-1 advantage in the 26th minute.  MUSC scored almost immediately after the re-start on a pass from Danielle Doucette (Cardinal Stritch University/Nicolet) to Maria Stephans (UW-Milwaukee/Hartford) to cut the deficit to 3-2, which is how the match stood at halftime.  Three minutes into the second half, Zima picked up her second goal and put the Majors on a 4-2 lead.  The Owls closed the gap again to a single goal in the 57th minute when Michelle Peltz (Cardinal Stritch University/Nicolet) headed in a corner kick from her Stritch teammate Anna Stadler (Wauwatosa West).  Croatians closed out the scoring in the 90th minute on a counterattack as Milwaukee United had committed additional numbers to the attack in search of an equalizer.  In addition to the scorers, strong performances were turned in by Alverno College’s Amber Thomas (Nicolet) and Neysel Powell (Milwaukee School of Languages), Kaitlin Malliet (St. Norbert College/DSHA), and Paige Birschbach (Ripon College/Campbellsport).

The Owls will close out the regular season this Saturday when they face the Croatian Eagles’ U23 team.  Kickoff is at 2pm at Croatian Park.
